Welcome to the Monmouth Science Initiative
Overview
The Monmouth Science Initiative aims to inspire local sixth form pupils through the medium of sophisticated practical experiments and to encourage them to consider the study of science and related disciplines further. The scheme is constantly evolving and new elements are regularly added to the programme. The activities are provided free to participants.
This year six schools were involved and each week approximately 60 pupils attended.In addition to the weekly programme, we stage an annual conference and offer teaching and training sessions for staff and pupils, either at Monmouth School or in your own school. See our outreach page for details.
The scheme supports the Welsh Assembly's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) agenda and forms a model which could enhance Science Education in Wales, something to which Monmouth School is fully committed. MSI was promoted as an example of sector leading practice in a recent Welsh Assembly publication on STEM activities.

Grants & Awards
In October 2010 the Monmouth Science Initiative was awarded a grant by the Welsh Assembly to develop the project and to promote the concept to other schools and educational organisations. This has permitted the purchase of additional resources that will further extend the activities available.
In April 2011 the Radio Astronomy section were given financial support in the form of a Royal Society Award. This will be used to develop the current telescope design to make it more portable and to enhance its ability to detect changes in the ionosphere.
